Cake, cake and more cake - buy it, make it, eat it

In the final instalment of our posts on birthday parties, and in our continuous quest to help make your lives easier, this week we have been trying to find the best place to get birthday cakes and other party treats. This has sadly involved sampling a lot of delicious cakes - all for you obviously. Here we round up the best we found.
At Home Bakers

Rock Bakehouse is run by Nathalie, who took the plunge after leaving her job in PR, having always baked for friends and relatives. She is a fantastic baker based in West Hampstead and can make beautiful bespoke children's birthday party cakes (like Harriet the Hedgehog pictured above), absolutely perfect cupcakes and other occasion cakes. See more pictures of Nathalie's amazing cakes here. North London Mums could not fault the cakes we tried which were very light with absolutely delicious icing. We highly recommend Nathalie's cakes, unless you are on a diet...
Nathalie has agreed to offer North London Mums a special 10% discount on birthday cakes. Just quote North London Mums when booking. Don't miss out on this great opportunity!

For Goodness Bake is run by Alyson, who is based on Hampstead and has built up a very loyal following amongst mums in and around North London. She supplies lots of the coffee shops we know and love and also makes lovely cupcakes and birthday cakes to order. Yum. Take a look at her lovely website for more info.

High Street Bakers

Dunns Bakery, is a longstanding Crouch End business, they make a very wide range of cakes at reasonable prices. North London Mums ordered a photo cake (you supply the photo and they do the rest) and was very happy with the results. A lovely light sponge and a beautiful professional finish. They are also very friendly and easy to deal with.

Gails Artisan Bakery, with branches in Crouch End and Hampstead is a favourite of ours as regular readers will already know. What you may not know is that they can personalise their delicious cakes for you, given 48 hours notice.

Luxury Desserts, Finchley was recommended to us by our Twitter followers. This small bakery in Finchley makes lovely birthday cakes to order.  We tried the honey cake and it was delicious.

Free From (making cakes for those intolerant)

Cakes Without was set up by two mums who have been friends since they were children. One of their children has severe allergies and so they decided to set up this lovely business baking cakes that taste good but are suitable for those with allergies. They can make - egg free, dairy free, gluten free and wheat free cakes all of which look and taste delicious so you don't have to compromise. Prices are reasonable and cakes are available for delivery or collection.

Rebecca's Cakes is (obviously) run by Rebecca, who loves to bake! She makes lots of lovely cakes and also specialises in those free from gluten and other allergens. Rebecca will deliver to most of North London. See her website here for more details.

Party Food

Lara set up From Home With Love after her son was born in order to provide other mums with a perfect time saving way to provide great home cooked food without needing to do the cooking! She can provide home cooked food for your children and adult guests. If you so desired you could tell people you made it yourself (North London Mums would never do this obviously). Check out her website for more details of what she can provide.

Make It Yourself

Last week we gave you some ideas for baking with children. For more sophisticated baking ideas, we recommend you check out the following lovely baking blogs that you might not have come across before:

Maison Cupcake - a mother, blogger and baker. This blog is well worth looking at for lovely recipes, reviews and general family ramblings.

Katie Cakes is another lovely baking blog with super pictures and a great archive of recipes.

Alternatively, if you fancy learning even more about how to decorate cakes, the excellent Craft Cakes (who also make delicious bespoke cakes) runs workshops in North London in cake decorating. They have classes coming up in September and October in Stoke Newington. Details here

We hope you find this round up useful in planning your party. Did we miss any great bakeries or bakers? Do tell us your favourites by commenting below.

All of this eating cake has shown us how much there is to write about cake! To fit in with National Cupcake Week 12-18 September we will be writing a feature on the best places to get cupcakes and afternoon tea in North London so do tell us your favourites so we can feature them. Yum.
