The best classes - Arts and Crafts

In our ongoing attempt to capture all the best things going on in North London, we will be bringing you a series of posts about the best classes. This week we focus on arts and craft classes. Most of the classes we feature are drop in but we have also included some classes that you need to book for the whole term, if they haven't started yet.



Monday

Arty Hands has a weekly sessions at 10am for pre-school toddlers with arts and crafts based around a weekly theme and regular messy play activities. Come down and have fun with your toddler. Tuesday


From Tuesday 6 September, the Creation Station, Lawn Road, N3, Hampstead, runs a weekly exploration Arts and Crafts Session  for 1 to 5 year olds from 10.10 to 11. Classes can be booked in advance or can be attended on a drop-in basis for £8.


At Gracelands Yard in Kensal Rise, there is Toddler Picassos for 15 months to 3 years at 9.30 and 10.30 and Mini Picassos for 5-7 years at 4pm and 8-12 year olds at 5pm. Children get to explore their creativity and the older ones will create masterpieces, all under the eye of an experienced art teacher. Little Hands Design run sewing classes in Belsize Park for children 4-5.30 and 5.30-7 - the skills that are taught include sewing by hand, using a sewing machine, draping and measuring, use of ready-made sewing patterns as well as pattern making and free design. Children will learn to develop their own design ideas and style by choosing their favourites from our own designs to get started. Tools and fabrics are supplied, but they encourage all children to develop expertise and experience in selecting their own materials. Drop in sessions can be booked if you email or call. The lovely Emporium on Fortis Green Road, East Finchley, has an after school crafts club at 4pm for 5+. This 5 week course costs £60 and starts 20th September. More details here

That Place On The Corner in Newington Green has a drop in arts and craft session for 4+, 4-5pm.


Wednesday

From Wednesday 7 September, the Creation Station, Albion Road, Muswell Hill, runs a weekly exploration Arts and Crafts Session  for 1 to 5 year olds from 10.10 to 11. Classes can be booked in advance or can be attended on a drop-in basis for £8.


Green Peas  offers nature and eco focussed messy play for children aged 1 to 4 years, from 2.30  to 3.30, Friends Meeting House, N10. Classes are £6.50 to drop in or £42 for a 7 week term. Each week focusses on a different skill such as painting or collage making, and use natural materials.



Kentish Town City Farm has a fab sounding after school pottery club. Mould, sculpt, stretch, pummel and play with clay. Suitable for all ages, this highly successful pottery club has now been runnning for five years at the farm. 4pm-5pm, cost £1.50.

100 Acres on Heath Street in Hampstead is running a drop in art class at 9.30am for 1.5+ and an after school art club for older children at 3.30pm. 


Thursday

From Thursday 8 September, the Creation Station, St. Mary's Hall, Hendon Lane, Finchley runs a weekly Exploration Arts and Crafts Session  for 1 to 5 year olds from 10.10 to 11. Classes can be booked in advance or can be attended on a drop-in basis for £8.

From Thursday 15 September, ArtyCraftKids at Totteridge Tennis Club is holding messy ply sessions from 10- 10.50 and 11- 11.50am. a Free taster session is available at £7, after which yo need to book half a term in advance at £6.50 per session. The sessions are planned to help children explore colour, shape, texture and pattern through a wide range of art and craft experiences. Children are encouraged to wander from activity to activity to allow them to explore at their own pace.



Fine Arts 4 Kids runs after school classes teaching fine art skills  at Middle Lane Methodist Church, Crouch End, N8 8NT between 4.00-5.00 or 5.15-6.15.The cost is £54 for a 6 week course.

Culture Kids run art classes at Pizza Express in Hampstead at 10, 11, 12, 2, 3 and 4pm for 2-6 year olds. Each week there a different theme and carefully planned-out class. Like Culture Kids, each class is about the wonderful world around us.You can join the class at any stage but then need to pay for the rest of the term as this class is not available as a drop-in. Cost is £15 per session.  Full details here.

Green Man Community Centre, East Finchley has a stay and play messy play 9.30-11.30 for 0-5s. Cost £1 per child.

Messy Play at the Arts Depot, North Finchley, runs weekly each Thursday for under 2s at 10am and 11.15 and over 2s at 2pm. £5.Book in advance. This glass is really interactive and fun but be prepared to get really messy! Arts Depot has really increased its children's classes offer recently, so do click here to see the excellent timetable. We'll be featuring more of their classes in this series of posts. We are big fans.


Friday


Crafty Tots takes place at Woodfield Road, New Barnet, on Fridays 10-11. Aimed at children 18 months to 5 years, the session offers a variety of Messy Play activities ranging from Playdough, paint and glue to using pippettes, fabrics, clean mud, crazy foam. Classes are limited to 12 children. Regular Members: £6 per class, pre-paid Half Termly, drop in (subject to space) is £7 per class. 

Kentish Town City Farm has a messy play drop in 10-12 for the under 5s. £4 per child and great fun.

100 Acres on Heath Street in Hampstead is running a drop in art class at 9.30am for 1.5+ and an after school art club for older children at 3.30pm. 


Saturday

Oak Studios in West Hampstead runs occasional workshops for children. Coming up on 17th September children can learn to knit a headband and on 15th October they can make an applique owl cushion. Full details here.




The October Gallery has free family art workshops every fortnight from 10am either at the gallery or the 1A Children's Centre. No need to book but arrive early to avoid disappointment. Full details here.

Sunday

Bruce Castle Museum, Tottenham has a free family arts and crafts drop in 2-4pm. The theme is different each week. More details here.
