Get active - Sports classes for children in North London

This week as part of our ongoing series looking at the best classes for children in North London, we round up the best sports classes.

There are lots of different activities to do with children that help them to get fit and learn team skills. Read on to find out more...
General Fitness


Sportikids runs multi sports classes in Finchley and Woodside Park. Sessions take place in parks in autumn, spring and summer and involve games, running, catching and throwing. 

Martial Arts

London Capoiera Centre runs classes for children aged 5-15 in Hendon, Golders Green and Mill Hill. Full details here.

There is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Bounds Green Primary School for children aged 12+ on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evening. Call 07958399429 for details.


If your kids love splashing around in the pool, then there are plenty of swimming classes to chose from.

Poolside Manor in Finchley has a range of parent and toddler and children's swimming classes. Poolside Manor has an extended shallow end to build beginner confidence and the entire pool length is scaled by a purpose-built viewing gallery. More information about classes here.

Tiny Swimmers offers lessons for children 4 months to 5 years at locations in Finchley, Barnet and Hornsey.

Camden Swiss Cottage Swimming Club, Swiss Cottage Sports Centre, has children's  lessons as well as Aquatots classes. Class details here.

Swimming Nature offers classes for babies, 3 months to 3 years as well as children's classes for 3 years +. The childrens classes are on a 2:1 basis, with children grouped into different animal levels. In addition to being ASA or STA qualified, teachers have also attended the Swimming Nature Foundation Course. Locations include Swiss Cottage and Brondesbury Park.


Islington Tennis Centre runs Munchkins Tennis - 7 week tennis courses for children aged 3- 5 which provide a first introduction to tennis, building co-ordination, movement, plus racket and ball skills.
All courses are taken by LTA qualified coaches.

Split Second Coaching at Avenue Tennis Club, Finchley, N3, offers Mini Tennis Courses with a 7 week mid week programme and a 12 week Saturday programme.


Arsenal Soccer School runs a number of courses in North London including a number of half term courses.

Kiddikicks offers football coaching for toddlers and children under 5 across London. Children aged 5-8 can attend Ligasoccer- formal training and matches for children under 8. Coaches are FA qualified, and sessions are skills concentrating on fun and participation. Find a class near you.

Little Kickers is a national network of informal but professionally run training classes for children aged 18 months to 7 years, with the goal of using football as a fun forum to instil children with a little extra confidence, co-ordination, control and sense of camaraderie.Classes are organised into Little Kicks (1 1/2 to 2 years 3 months), Junior (2- 3 1/2 years), Mighty (3 1/2 to 5) and Mega Kickers (5-7). There are a number of classes  across north London.

Sport Academies  offers football coaching for 3 to 7 year olds. The curricukum has been devised with QPR and classes are high energy with a focus on developing movement and football skills through games and fun tournaments. Classes take place on Sunday mornings at UCS Active, Frognal, NW3 6XH. 

Enjoyaball runs classes for children aged 18 months to school year 3. Classes run in Golders Green and are a really fun way to introduce children to ball skills.

For something a bit bendy...


The Little Gym has parent/child classes for children 4 months- 3 years which focus on developing strength, co-ordination and independence, and pre-schoool classes for children 3- 6 years which focus on greater strength, flexibility and co-ordination, increasing confidence and integrating into groups, as well as a primary school gymnastics programme for children 6-12 years. A new centre is opening shortly in Hampstead, and hee are currently classes in Chiswick and Westfield.

For something a bit different...

Geckos offers climbing for kids aged 9+ at The Castle Climbing Centre, Green Lanes. The Westway Sports Centre also offers climbing sessions and classes, including a Tiny Tots Junior Climbing Club for 5-6 year olds. Details here.


Fighting Fit Fencing Club, at 2 Cottage Road, off Caledonia Road, N7, holds introductory and beginners classes for children aged 6-13 years.

2FW fencing club at Parliament Hill School, 140 Highgate Road NW5 offers fencing classes for children aged 7-15. Prices start form £140 per term. Find details here.


The Little Kickers Team has set up Little Rugby. The programme was developed with the primary objective of providing the 2 – 5s with a fun, positive introduction to sport. The basics of rugby are imparted through specially developed games which fire the children’s imaginations. Classes are divided into Junior Rugby for 2- 3 1/2 years and Mighty Rugby for children 3 1/2 to 5. Currently the nearest classes are in Little Venice.

Rugby Tots is a rugby specific play programme for young children. The programme has been designed to develop your child’s physical, psychological and social attributes, as well as gently encouraging rugby specific skills such as running with the ball, finding space, kicking, catching, scoring a try and much more. Classes are grouped io 2-3 1/2 yers, 3 1/2 to 5 years and 5-7 years. Teh nearest clas sto North London is in Notting Hill.

Finchley RFC, Summers Lane, Finchley,  trains under 7's every Sunday morning at 10am.
