Table for Two - Romantic Local Restaurants in North London

Just because we're parents, doesn't mean that we don't occasionally want (and need) a romantic night out without the kids. However, with a babysitter time is literally money so it can be tempting not to stray too far from home when going out. Lucky then that there are some really great local restaurants in North London that can hold their own with any in town.

Here are some of our favourite restaurants for a special night out. We hope you find somewhere in this list that you've not visited before.

Morgan M, Islington is a small and stylish dining room on Liverpool Road. This is one of the best places to get modern French food in London and it has fantastic 6 course tasting menus as well as a great a la carte menu. In particular, this is unusual in having a 6 course vegetarian tasting menu, which is every bit as good as the non-vegetarian menu. The food is beautifully presented and tastes amazing. We hardly had room for dessert but were really glad we did squeeze it in as this turned out to be the highlight of dinner. All in all a very relaxing dinner experience and somewhere we will visit again.

500, Holloway Road is another small restaurant, Italian this time. The room is unassuming and simple but the food is absolutely stunning. This is actually found at 782 Holloway Road and is called 500 after the quintessentially Italian Fiat 500. The menu is very straightforward but each dish we had was delicious and unforgettable. We definitely highly recommend booking a table here. Reviewers might call it unpretentious, but we will simply say it is delicious!

Odette's, Primrose Hill is a longstanding North London favourite and  has a really great menu for vegetarians and meat eaters. Food is both unusual and delicious and the restaurant itself is relaxing and romantic. We always enjoy a visit here and like to pretend that we are part of the Primrose Hill Set, whatever that might be...

Manna, Primrose Hill is the best vegetarian restaurant we've every visited and also has one of the nicest atmospheres of any restaurant in North London. Down a quiet side street, this is candlelit and atmospheric and the food never disappoints. We love the fact that most vege restaurants seem a little homemade, whereas this restaurant serves food you'd find hard to recreate at home. The food both looks and tastes amazing and non-veges will also find it a treat.

York and Albany, Camden is the Northern outpost of the Gordon Ramsay empire. The restaurant is in a refurbished pub so it still has the relaxing feel of a pub but is also beautifully decorated and a good place for a romantic dinner. The food is really good here - well cooked classics such as you'd expect from Mr Ramsay. We've also had breakfast here a few times and can highly recommend it as a good place to start the day. If you're feeling extra romantic, there are also rooms here!

Viajante, Hackney is not strictly in North London but is worth a mention because it is close by, unusual and exciting. Here you chose between a three, six or nine course menu and let the fantastic chef Nuno Mendes surprise you. This is the kind of food that is quite hard to describe and impossible to recreate at home. You can be certain that you will try new things and have a meal that is great to look at. Definitely one for a special occasion. They can also accommodate dietary requirements.

New Opening: One Blenheim Terrace has just opened in St Johns Wood and it's chef has an impressive pedigree having worked for Gordon Ramsay and the Ivy. North London Mums has not been there yet, however, we think it looks exciting and lovely and will be visiting and reviewing soon so wanted to let you know about it before we go. If you've been or if you go, do let us know what you think.

These restaurants are all fairly expensive and therefore for special occasions. We'd really like to hear about great little places you know about and visit a lot that are really reasonably priced as we'll be rounding those up soon. Do leave us a comment below.

For reasonably priced restaurants, the places I miss the most since leaving Finchley are Cochin, on Ballards Lane N3 and High Road, N2, http://www.cochinrestaurant.co.uk/ which serves gorgeous South Indian food, and Daruma San, Regents Park Rd N3, a v authentic Japanese diner (no website).

I also love love love La Rugletta, a tiny but very authentic Italian restaurant tucked away in East Finchley on Church Lane (again, no website). Booking is an absolute must. The food, particularly the specials, is amazing!

Thanks. Those are all great suggestions. La Rugoletta is definitely on our list. It's such a hidden gem but the food is amazing!
