When the sun shines, there's nothing nicer than heading out of London with a bucket and spade and an itch to see the sea. These are the best seaside towns that are doable in a day trip from North London (by train or car). Get up early and you can really make a day of it and still be home in time for bedtime. Enjoy.
The ultimate seaside trip from London needs no introduction. Here's a post we wrote about a good family day out in Brighton that we had last winter. If you're heading there for the day or for the weekend, check out www.brightonmums.com who review local attractions and feature family friendly things to do in Brighton and Hove.
Whitstable, Margate, Broadstairs - Kent
These towns along the Kent coast are fairly easy to get to and very charming once you arrive. Whitstable is perhaps the most famous and also the nicest although the beach is stony. It's a fairly easy drive or train from North London. You can also visit Whitstable Castle which has a great children's playground. There are lots of great places to eat and nice art galleries and shops. Enjoyable for a day trip or a weekend.
About 35 miles from London so definitely doable as a day trip, this is a really sweet town. It's part of a nature reserve and there is a lovely sandy family beach perfect for building sandcastles on. Best to visit when the tide is high. Old Leigh high street is very quaint with nice restaurants serving sea food and family friendly pubs.
North London Mums visited Maldon over the bank holiday weekend and reviewed it in detail here. A nice day trip from North London.
Another well known tourist spot, there really is loads for families to do in Southend including a large theme park - Adventure Island is free to enter, a mini railway, and a Sea Life Adventure. There are also a number of nice and clean sandy beaches. There are also some great museums in Southend.
West Wittering, Sussex
Recommended by one of our readers who said it is an "amazing unspoilt beach" that is about 90 minutes drive from North London. It has high quality water good for swimming too. See more details here.
