Half Term and Halloween in North London - Spooky Goings On


Half term is coming up fast and depending on when your half term this year Halloween either falls right in the middle of the week or just after and so there are lots of spooky goings on. We round up the best courses, camps, events and parties so you can plan your holidays. Have fun!


Courses and Camps

The very lovely Tea Party in Finchley has Princess School running 29th -2nd November 10.30-12. There will be storytelling, face painting, a chance to learn princess etiquette and more. For ages 3-6. Don't forget your tiaras!

Camden Arts Centre has a really great  selection of half term courses  including clay and ceramics. Running 30 October - 2 November.

Poolside Manor in Finchley has a multi activity day camp running all week. You don't need to attend all week. There are also intensive swimming courses.

Fine Art 4 Kids has holiday workshops running in Watford, St Albans and Crouch End. Visit website for details and booking. 

Creative Wizz Kidz has an unnacompanied holiday camp for 3-9 year olds in Hampstead that allows children to get creative in a fun environment.

Holiday Academy runs a day camp in Camden with a programme of arts, drama, sports, team games and music. For ages 3-12. 22-26th October.

Sportikids have a camp running from 29th -2nd at Frith Manor School. For ages 3-11 and providing a range of sport and games. My daughter absolutely loved this in the summer holidays.

Little Superstars (www.accesstosports.org.uk/littlesuperstars) are running exciting multi-sports sessions for 3-7 year olds from October 29th-November 2nd in the Highbury & Stoke Newington areas. Sessions are suitable for boys and girls of all abilities and are a great chance to learn new sports and skills. 

Fashion Bonanza with Little Hands Design! (age 8-18 years and separate group 6-8 yrs) 22nd-26th October and 29th October – 2nd November.
Times: every day 9-4pm (full days or 5 mornings or 5 afternoons)
Cost: £225.- full days/£120.- half day week incl. fabrics and haberdashery plus lunch option £4.-/day
Venue: Little Hands Design, 67 Belsize Lane NW3 5AU, just a few minutes to walk from Swiss Cottage and Belsize Park tubes. Imagine being able to use the sewing machine and design and create your own outfits and accessories! Dress to impress this autumn with clothes made by you! Look forward to our special ‘Design with Sqaures and Rectangles’ and ‘Upcycling’ projects as well as our popular‘Textile Arts and Crafts Sessions’. And of course we will have plenty of our classic clothes making projects on offer. Not to forget HALLOWEEN outfits and trick or treat bags…Come and get inspired!!!

During half term JCC has lots of things going on too with a Half Term Activities Club which offers photography, cooking, puppetry, football and more and a Half Term Music Club which offers lots of opportunities for young musicians to try out exciting new ways of making music. Both of these are for 5-10s.

The Little Art Club is running arts and crafts classes for children aged 5-11 in North London, run by  a trained artist. Each session will involve a different project, from making tooth fairy pouches, designing t-shirts, to making Halloween related items such as pumpkin tea light holders, trick or treat bags and stitching felt stuffed owls. Theatre


Little Angel Theatre  in Islington is showing Tear Thief throughout October -
Adapted from the book written by Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy. Each night, in the hours between supper and bedtime, the Tear Thief carries her waterproof, silvery sack as she steals the tears of every child who cries. But what does she do with all those tears? For ages 3+.

The Arts Depot in North Finchley is showing The Incredible Book Eating Boy - Henry loved books, but not like you and I like books…he loved to EAT books. This exciting theatre adaptation of Oliver Jeffers’ award-winning children’s book by Bootworks Theatre follows the story of a boy with a voracious appetite for books. 29th - 31st, age 4+.

Jacksons Lane is showing the fantastic The Insect Circus again, which we saw and loved last year. It's on 29th October - 2nd November and is a really great cabaret show for children featuring acrobatic insects and circus acts. The Barbican Theatre is are presenting an enchanting and award-winning new children’s show, Miss Ophelia, in the Barbican’s Pit theatre, from 31 October to 7 November. Using puppetry and music to tell the tale of little Miss Ophelia and her shadowy sidekicks, this creative theatrical production will leave a lasting impression on children (and adults alike!). The show is for children 6+. Museums and Attractions




Museum Of Childhood has Retro Kids - travel back in time with trails, stories and art activities. Free, drop in.

Willows Farm has a Pumpkin Festival 27th October - 4th November. There is a free pumpkin on entry for each child, Pumpkin Olympics, Pumpkin Hunt, carving competition and much more.

The RAF Museum, Hendon has Big Draw Week - A week of activities that helps children explore their creative side through drawing, their imaginations fired by the Museum's stunning aircraft collection. Free sessions from 11-1 and 2-4.

Grant Museum of Zoology at UCL has family activities all week 1-5pm - themed Tooth and Claw - find out how carnivores find, catch and eat their prey. All ages, free and drop-in.


Cartoon Museum (near Tottenham Court Road) has lots of great half term activities for older children including learn to draw manga cartoons and learn to draw like the Beano! Full details here.

Geffrye Museum has half term activities running 20th - 2nd - exploring home celebrations and national festivals this half-term, from Birthdays, Jubilees, the Big Draw and sporting events to Eid, Christmas and Diwali. One-Off Events

Tuesday 23 October

Islington Museum has Caravan Craft - To celebrate our fantastic exhibition on Roma culture we are building a big Roma road. Come along to Islington Museum and help us design, draw and decorate horse drawn caravans and tell us about your journeys.Free.

Wednesday 24 October

The wonderful Classical Babies is holding a half-term concert at 2pm, St. Peter's Church, Belsize Square NW3 4HY - solo piano. Tickets are £10 per adult, children free. Older children are welcome at these concerts. Coffee & cake is provided for the parents.


Friday 26 October

Islington Museum has Roma Journeys - Explore some of the fascinating aspects of Roma culture with our story telling extravaganza! From dance to art find out about Roma traditions with this hands-on workshop.2-3pm. Free.

Classical Babies is holding another half-term concert featuring a solo harp at the O2 Centre Community Venue (upstairs), O2 Centre, 255 Finchley Rd NW3 6LU. Tickets are £10 per adult, children free. Older children are welcome at these concerts. Coffee & cake is provided for the parents.


Monday 29 October 

Creation Station is having a slimy and spooky session for Halloween at Leon in Brent Cross - The holiday classes will be £7.5 per child and £4 per sibling.10.45am.

Lauderdale House has a spooky workshop - Create some seriously spooky stuff for Halloween!  Go on! Rattle those bones and scare your parents!  Who knows what you might come up with – spooky masks, creepy cards or magical mobiles!!! Advance booking advisable (limited numbers). CUFOS Playgroup in Muswell Hill is having a Halloween Party - Come dressed in your Halloween outfits for an afternoon of spooky fun and ghoulish games! Surprises galore!

Our favourite arts and craft class Green Peas - Eco Friendly Arts has two workshops today for ages 15 months to 5 years- Join them for a Halloween themed messy play session! Spooky crafts and terrifying mess with tactile play.. Bats, witches and ghosts and our old favourites- painting and grain scooping! 9.30 and 10.40, £8 in Waterlow Park Centre.


Wednesday 31 October

Fringe Crafts in Muswell Hill has Make a Superhero Costume for children aged 5+ and Machine Sewing - Quilting for children aged 8+. Both sessions are £20.

Lauderdale House, Highgate has a Spooky Trail - we are calling for all ghosts and ghouls, witches and werewolves, skeletons and sprites! Explore our spooky Historic House and Gardens on a magical adventure trail. Who knows whom you might meet! Dress up, wear your masks and be ready for the unexpected!

You can celebrate Halloween with a Spooky Word Search at Wood Green Library.

For older children, Royal Institution of Great Britain has a great family event called Searching for Aliens - One of the questions we would most like to answer is are we alone in the Universe...do aliens exist? In this talk we will explore how scientists are working to discover life on other planets, in our own solar system and beyond. Key scientific ideas and techniques used in the search for aliens will be brought to life with interactive demonstrations suitable for a family audience. 6pm.

Classical babies is holding a special Halloween Concert at St. Peter's in Belsize Square on Wednesday 31st October at 2pm - a violin & piano concert of "scary" music including Saint-Saens 'Danse Macabre'! Children are encouraged to come in fancy dress, there will be candle-lit pumpkins and treats for the children and a prize for the best costume! Tickets are £10 per adult, children free. Older children are welcome at these concerts. Coffee & cake is provided for the parents.


Thursday 1 November

Fringe Crafts in Muswell Hill has a sewing workshop for teens and a learn to make a skirt session also for teens.

See The Unlucky Mummy Puppet Show at Wood Green Library -  Based on the legend of a 19th Century British Museum artefact. As the Unlucky Mummy unravels the audience hears of its various colourful owners and the misfortunes that befell them. The story lasts about 30 minutes and involves humour, puppetry and audience interaction. Suitable for 5+ and families. 10.30-11am.

Our favourite arts and craft class Green Peas - Eco Friendly Arts has two workshops today for ages 15 months to 5 years at 2.30 and 3.40pm at Wilton Community Church - Easy and fun animal mask making - tigers, zebras, rabbits and more! Also - painting, playdough modelling, nature table, grains scooping and printmaking...
