North London Mums' Guide to Christmas Shows

The festive season is packed full of theatric treats for children - from classics like The Snowman  and The Christmas Carol to new and exciting theatre, there is something for everyone to enjoy. We can't wait! Here's our pick of what's on in the run up to Christmas in North London and around..


Central London

Sooty in Space is heading to the Duchess Theatre from 21 December to 5 January 2013. With magic, music and lots of audience participation, Sooty in Space promises to be an Intergalactic Giggle for the whole family!

The Snowman is showing a the Peacock Theatre, Holborn. When a young boy’s snowman comes to life on Christmas Eve, the two set off on a night-time quest for adventure. On their travels they meet dancing penguins, reindeer and naturally, Father Christmas. Watch spellbound as the Snowman flies through the night sky above you, before escaping the clutches of the evil Jack Frost to return home for Christmas morning. From 28 November to 6 January 2013.

North London

The Chickenshed Theatre is showing Sleeping Beauty - Dream On  between 28 November and 12 January 2013,  serving up a familiar story in an entirely fresh and funky way. Chickenshed’s professional company will lead a truly huge cast, featuring hundreds of Chickenshed’s young members and students and joined by our all ages community theatre groups, to deliver a fabulously entertaining and exciting extravaganza. Age 5+ recommended.

Between 5 and 29  December, the Chickenshed is also showing the Christmas Tales, an all new Tales-o-mime for 2012. All your favourite Tales characters will bring you a sackful of silly songs, with plenty of potty puppeteering and festive fun. Prepare to laugh, sing, dance in your seat and join in with Can-Can, The Thing That Goes Blurgh and all the team’s games. For ages 0-7yrs

The wonderful Arts Depot, North Finchley  is showing The Night Before Christmas on 2 December at 12pm, 3pm and 4.30pm. For children 3-7 years. The story of the little mouse who sets off in search of Father Christmas to find out for himself. Along the way he dodges the family cat, gets directions from a cowardly toy soldier and is given some unexpected advice from the magical fairy on top of the tree. 

The Gruffalo returns to the Arts Depot from 8 December to 6 January.  Everyone's favourite monster is back on stage in a smash hit musical adaptation of the award-winning picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Tall Stories, the company behind the much loved The Gruffalo's Child, brings us more monster fun this Christmas with The Gruffalo! We saw it last year and were entranced by the  funny, energetic interpretation of the classic book. For Children 3+.

The Christmas Show at Jacksons Lane, Highgate is The Elves and the Shoemaker which runs from 8 December to 3 January 2013.  This is a new take on the much-loved story, featuring mischievous puppets, music and plenty of surprises. Promises to be a magical, fun-filled festive for  children aged 2+. There is a family workshop on Saturday 22 December at 12.45.

And a bit west...

The Lyric Theatre is showing Room on the Broom from 21 November until 13 January 2013, adapted for the stage from the best-selling book written by Children's Laureate Julia Donaldson MBE and Axel Scheffler. The witch and her cat are flying happily along on their broomstick when a stormy wind blows the witch's hat, bow and wand away into the night and adventures follow! A magical, musical delight for children aged 3+.

For something a bit different, The Puppet Barge in Little Venice is showing The Christmas Carol, voiced by Simon Callow with puppets by Athena Vasselakis. Showing from 3rd December to 8th January. Performances from 1 December to 13 January 2013.

The panto this year at the Hackney Empire is Dick Whittington and his Cat, running from 1 December to 6 January 2013. A show for all the family, Dick Whittington tells the rags-to-riches tale of a young man and his loyal cat, on their exciting quest to find fame and fortune. Featuring all the traditional pantomime ingredients; thrilling adventure, show-stopping songs, dazzling dance routines, knockabout comedy and bags of audience participation, this is guaranteed to be another Hackney hit and the perfect Christmas treat.

The Millfield Theatre, Enfield, presents Mother Goose, from 29 November to 5 January. Welcome to the magical, wonderful world of Mother Goose, where dreams come true, but not always as you wished for. Steeped in magic, full of wonder and packed with surprises this story is perfect for the whole family.

Rosemary Branch Theatre, N1, presents The Three Musketeers from the Charles Court Opera.  It's all for fun and fun for all as CCO swash and buckle their way through their 6th boutique panto with their legendary esprit de corps and joie de vivre. Join Athos, Aramis, Porthos, D'Artagnan, Cardinal Richelieu etc. in a tour de force of music, jokes and utter silliness. From 7 December to 9 January 2013.

The Shaw Theatre presents the classic panto Beauty and the Beast from 6 December .  Featuring popular TV Presenter Alison Hammond  best known from “ITV’s This Morning”, the show promises to be a festive extravaganza.


For a real Christmas Classic and a treat for you and the children, head to see The Nutcracker at The Coliseum from 12 December to 5 January. The English National Ballet's production is lavish and beautiful and there are family friendly performances for under 5s on 14th December and 1 January
