It's amazing how quickly half term holidays come around. The February one is just around the corner and luckily there's lots to do. We round up the best.
Jacksons Lane Theatre in Highgate is showing the superb Dogs Don't Do Ballet on 20th-23rd February. We saw this at Little Angel Theatre over the Christmas holidays and loved it. See our review here.
Little Angel Theatre in Islington is A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings - a show for the over 6s only: Inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez's story this is a startling world of ruined beauty and magic reality where everyone dreams of their five minutes of fame and riches, and the extraordinary takes flight. The show was a sell out last time it was on and has had rave reviews.
Tricycle Theatre, Kilburn has two shows. A showing of Dogs Don't Do Ballet on 18th (see above) and The Gingerbread Man on 20th.
Barbican Centre has There's a Rabbit In the Moon - a magical workshop to put fears of the dark to bed. For ages 4-9. £8.50.
The Southbank Centre is hosting the Imagine Children's festival which runs until Sunday 24 February. There are a host of fabulous activities planned, including a Dinosaur Petting Zoo, fantastic workshops, comedy, puppet shows and more. There are also visits from a number of fantastic authors and characters including Judith Kerr (Mog and Tiger Who Came To Tea) and Spot. See the full programme here. Definitely a holiday highlight.
Museum Of Childhood has a nostalgic week planned called New Wave Kids - with a look back to childhood in the 80s. Flash back to the 1980s in this fun-filled half term. Join Story Spinner for a creative re-telling of Shirley Hughes's popular children's book, "Alfie Gets in First". Design an iconic Pac-Man Badge or a Care Bear greeting card. Have a go at a Rubik's Cube and complete the Where's Wally trail for your chance to win a prize. Events 10.30-16.00 and FREE. Plus there are the regular exhibitions and collections. Always a great day out.
Museum of London has some great family events including Musical Park on 20th for ages 1-5 and Mask Making on 22nd and 23rd for ages 5+.
The RAF Museum, Hendon, is hosting Half Term Helicopters - Learn more about the history of the Helicopter Collection through a series of fascinating and fun interactive workshops.
Children can also make their own simple paper helicopter to take home and keep free of charge. 11-1pm and 2-4pm. FREE.
Grant Museum of Zoology at UCL has Fantastic Fossils - Get your hands on some of the museum’s most fabulously fantastic fossils this half-term. If its bones of an Iguanodon you want to stroke or teeth of a giant shark you wish to feel, we have them and so much more. Bring along your budding palaeontologists and take part in our Pterosaur-iffic hands–on, specimen-based activities. This event is FREE and there is no need to book, drop in between 1pm and 5pm.
British Library has free family workshops on 19th, 20th and 21st - Artist Meera Chaudra leads a creative workshop for all the family based around the patterns and shapes used in Mughal art.
Workshops last for approximately one and a half hours. Please arrive early to guarantee a space.
Suitable for age 6 and upwards. 11am and 3pm. FREE.
Cartoon Museum (near Tottenham Court Road) has half term workshops all week. For ages 8-11. See full programme here.
Sir John Soane's Museum has events for children aged 7-12 on 20th and 21st for young people interested in architechture and interiors. See full programme here.
Bruce Castle Museum, Haringey has some great, free family events on this half term including: Face Modelling, Junk Sculptures and Dressing up for a historic photo shoot. All events for children aged 5-13 and FREE.
British Museum has a great sounding week of events focusing on Amazing China - Come to the Museum for a week of activities celebrating the history and culture of China. Head off from the Chinese hub in the Great Court to explore the galleries where you will find things to make, stories to hear and objects to handle. Suitable for all ages. FREE.
Geffrye Museum, Shoreditch has a week of events called Design Through The Decades for children aged 5-16. Explore homes from a different century every day from the Tudors and Stuarts, Georgians, Victorians and finally the 20th century. Make wacky wigs, stylish silhouettes and funky fifties artworks. Activities are 10.30-12.30 and 2-4pm. FREE.
Willows Farm has February Frolics - visit the Lambing Marquee and see newborn lambs every day. With a packed daily programme of farmyard fun and adventure play with a prize for helping Bo Peep find her lost sheep, Mad Science shows and acres of adventure play.
Courses and Camps
JCC London has a really great sounding Half Term Activities Club which is taking place in Parliament Hill for years 1-6. There is a wide range of things to do including cooking, drama, circus skills, arts, games and more. For more details see here. Tea Party in Finchley has Princess School running Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10.30-12. There will be storytelling, face painting, a chance to learn princess etiquette and more. For ages 3-6. Don't forget your tiaras!
Camden Arts Centre has courses including Playing With Film For Juniors and Clay For Infants.
Islington Arts Factory has two courses running all week - dance and drama. Full details here.
Poolside Manor in Finchley has a multi activity day camp running all week. You don't need to attend all week.
Fine Art 4 Kids has classes running in Crouch End, St Albans and Watford.
Creative Wizz Kidz has a holiday club 10-1 in Belsize Square for ages 3-9.
Cecil Sharp House has a 3 day camp for fabulous folk music making - Running over three days between 20-22 February, Get Your Folk On! is for young people aged 12-18 years, with varied levels of musical experience, from improvers to advanced players. Players of any instrument are welcome and the course will be led by EFDSS Associate Artist Laurel Swift and a friendly team of expert folk musicians and tutors.
Holiday Academy is a creative and engaging kids daycamp for every school holiday for age groups from 3 - 12 in Camden
Fringe Crafts in Muswell Hill has lots of great events over half term including a sewing course, knitting course and crochet course. Full details here.
Bridge Arts and Culture and West London Tots invite you to Spring Into The Lion King at Izzy Jones Boutique in Queens Park - This fun course is jam-packed with song, dance, drama and arts & crafts as the children go on an adventure to the African jungle to meet The Lion King !
Little House of Baking is running three baking classes for children over the holidays including a cake pop making class and dessert making class.
Little Hands Design has half term courses in sewing and design for ages 8+.
Little Superstars are running a multi-sports camp for 3-7 year olds in Highbury.
Sportikids run a multi sports camp for ages 3-11 at Frith Manor School.
Green Peas Messy Play has art classes happening on 19th and 21st in Highgate and Muswell Hill. We love these eco-friendly art classes and these classes will be doing 'crazy hat' making, creating puppets and painting, modelling with playdough, printmaking and more.
