North London Mum's Weekend Round-Up 28 and 29 June 2014

So- here we are- mid summer (well just past) and - if you are not glued to tennis or football- loads of lovely things to enjoy with the family.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks at JW3

Saturday 28 June

For something really different head to Somerset House for the National Art and Design Saturday Summer Club Show. This unique exhibition spotlights the potential of more than 400 young people aged 14–16, showcasing their exciting new work in disciplines that range from drawing, painting and sculpture to photography, print-making, ceramics and digital graphics. For the past year, 14 colleges and universities of art and design around the country have opened their doors every Saturday morning to nurture young talent from over 100 local schools. This Summer Show, now in its second year, is the inspirational result. During the exhibition student artists and designers from the programme will be working in the gallery space.

Kate Shortt's Comedy Chello is the Saturday morning show at Lauderdale House this weekend. Come and be silly! Come and be musical!  Come and see how Kate Shortt, cellist, singer and comedienne transforms her cello into all sorts of animals and characters.  She’ll delight you all with funny songs to join in with and shake fruit shakers too!  Performances at 10 and 11.15. For children 2-8 years. 

Sunday 29 June

The Royal Opera House family sunday returns this Sunday from 12-4pm (last admission 3pm). Family Sundays are a new regular event for families to come and explore the Royal Opera House, its artists and the world of opera and ballet. Each Family Sunday is packed full of different creative and practical activities for all the family, as well as space to relax and enjoy live music in an informal setting. For children 6+.

Head to the farmer's market at Marylebone for a junior farmer's market,  this Sunday, promising Punch and Judy, Greedy Goat ice cream, juice cocktails, games, deck chairs, mini diggers and tractors, seed planting and more. Free, 10am-2pm.

For something a bit racier, head to the London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival taking place at the London Regatta Centre, 10 -6pm. Expect a terrific blend of entertainment likely to include martial arts displays, live music, traditional Chinese lion & dragon dancing, a food festival, and much much more.   
JW3 is holding its regular imagination station family music time at 10.15, for children under 5. It’s an original and exciting music and movement session for adults and children using instruments and specially selected equipment. There is also a screening of the classic Bedknobs and Broomsticks at 10.30. 
The Bruce Castle Museum has a Teddy Bear's Picnic from 1.30-4pm.  Head to the museum lawn for a pretend picnic with teddy bears of all sizes old and new, and tea sets! Make your own paper-teddy bear and read a story.  For children 2+.

The National Gallery has an "Off the Canvas" workshop from 11-12.20 and 2- 3.20 this Sunday. 
Discover paintings that are so real they could leap out of the frame. Build 3D glasses with artist Viyki Turnbull and explore optical illusions created using colour. Tickets are free and are allocated 1 hour before the workshop.

The London Jewish Cultural Centre is celebrating Cadbury's 125th birthday with a workshop for children 8-10 to produce their own scrumptious treats! Under the expert tuition of chocolatier Steph Saffer of Kokopellis they will create cool chocs whilst uncovering the fascinating story behind Cadbury’s. Take home all of your mouth-watering delights in your very own chocolate box. The session runs from 2-4pm and costs £20.

So it’s only Tuesday and already you’re exhausted ….By 9am you’ve already done 3 hours hard graft to get everyone ready for nursery and/or school before you’re even started your ‘working day’. And the evening won’t be much better – the mad rush from your last meeting to catch the tube so you’re not the last one to pick up again, and then dealing with everyone else’s emotions – they’re tired and they’ve missed you which guarantees a few tantrums before bedtime. Meanwhile your partner’s arrived home and wants some quality time with you, or at the very minimum something to eat! So you fall into bed exhausted and wonder why you’re on this crazy treadmill - while you love your job you’re also beginning to feel torn between keeping everything together at home and doing a great job at work - plus you have a sneaking suspicion you might not be doing either ‘job’ very well!

If this sounds familiar then you’re not alone, research carried out for the Family and Work show at the end of 2013 with 1000 working or expectant parents revealed, alarmingly, that a quarter of working mums wished they had not gone back to work after having children, and this is largely due to lack of support at home and at work.

Three top tips:

  1. Firstly you need to block out some time for yourself - you know deep down that if you manage to have some quality time for yourself whether it’s a yoga class, a massage once a week or a regular night out that you will be a better parent and employee the next day. Frame it as an investment in yourself that will pay dividends to the people around you.
  2. Secondly, embrace delegation – get the kids involved – it will build their confidence and make a chore seem fun. It might take a bit longer at the beginning but once they get the hang of feeding the cat or laying the table they will love the responsibility.
  3. Reframe your value at work – highlight what you do contribute, concentrate on what your strengths are, and set boundaries for yourself. Give yourself permission to take a lunch break, not agree to meetings at the end of the day and not to feel you have to prove your worth by taking on too much.
