What to do with kids in North London this weekend (when you just need something easy)

Some weekends you’ve got the energy to plan something big. Other weekends you just need to get out the house, keep the kids entertained, and make the day feel like a win. This is for those weekends. Nothing complicated, nothing expensive for the sake of it, just a few solid options in North London that actually work.

If you need space, go to Alexandra Palace Park. It’s one of those places that gives you breathing room straight away. There’s a playground, loads of open space for running around, and you don’t feel boxed in like you can at smaller parks. If the kids have bikes or scooters, even better. Take snacks, maybe a football, and you’ve got a good couple of hours sorted without spending anything.

If the weather turns (because it probably will), soft play is your safety net. Places like Little Dinosaurs in Winchmore Hill are ideal when you need something contained. It’s not glamorous, and yes it can be a bit chaotic, but the kids will love it and you’ll get a moment to sit down with a coffee. Go early if you can, it’s calmer and you’ll thank yourself later.

If you want something that feels a bit more like a “day out” without the full effort, try a local café stop with space for kids. There are quite a few family-friendly cafés across North London where no one minds a bit of noise and you’re not rushing to leave. It’s a simple one, but sometimes sitting down for 45 minutes while the kids have a snack is exactly what you need.

For a quick win, playground hopping works surprisingly well. Pick two or three parks close to each other and move between them. It keeps things interesting for the kids without needing a big plan, and it breaks the day up nicely. It’s also a good fallback when attention spans are low and nothing is holding for long.

If you’ve got a bit more energy, look out for local events happening in community spaces, libraries, or small venues. These are often low-cost or free and feel a bit different to the usual routine. They’re not always heavily advertised, but when you find them they can turn an average weekend into something a bit more memorable.

And if all else fails, don’t overthink it. A walk, a park, a snack stop, and home again is more than enough. Not every weekend needs to be packed or perfect. Sometimes it just needs to be easy, manageable, and get everyone through the day in one piece.

That’s the aim here. Not perfection, just something that works.
